Ma la verit\u00e0 \u00e8 che, soprattutto all&#8217;interno dell&#8217;ecosistema Pure Storage, la scelta non riguarda un&#8217;unica risposta &#8220;giusta&#8221;. Si tratta di scegliere il datastore pi\u00f9 adatto alle <strong>esigenze operative<\/strong> e <strong>alle esigenze delle applicazioni<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VMware, fondata nel 1998, ha 27 anni. Sono passati 27 anni dall&#8217;evoluzione dello storage e sono <em>cambiate cos\u00ec tante<\/em> cose. Alcuni di noi ricordano il blocco LUN, che ci ha costretto a mantenere piccole le nostre dimensioni LUN. Fortunatamente, l&#8217;introduzione delle API vStorage per l&#8217;integrazione degli array (VAAI) ha portato al blocco del settore e all&#8217;enorme scalabilit\u00e0 delle performance. I primi utilizzatori di NFS hanno apprezzato la flessibilit\u00e0 e la facilit\u00e0 d&#8217;uso del provisioning di enormi datastore. Man mano che vSphere e vCenter maturavano all&#8217;interno dei data center e VMware dominava il panorama della virtualizzazione, emergevano pi\u00f9 casi d&#8217;uso e aumentavano i massimi. Quali erano le differenze originali, cosa \u00e8 cambiato e cosa rimane rilevante oggi? Vediamo il panorama attuale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Storicamente, ogni opzione di storage offriva due vantaggi principali. Esaminiamo innanzitutto i vantaggi dell&#8217;NFS:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Facilit\u00e0 di gestione:<\/strong> NFS funziona come un proprio file system, che VMware sfrutta. \u00c8 accessibile da pi\u00f9 piattaforme, determinando alcune vulnerabilit\u00e0 della sicurezza che sono state risolte nel tempo (considera l&#8217;implementazione dell&#8217;autenticazione Kerberos). Tuttavia, la semplicit\u00e0 di navigare direttamente nei file delle macchine virtuali utilizzando qualsiasi computer con le credenziali appropriate rimane un vantaggio chiave. Possiamo ricordare che l&#8217;esportazione dei volumi \u00e8 un&#8217;operazione NFS e SMB che ci consente di gestire facilmente le ISO. Al contrario, l&#8217;accesso ai file su block storage formattati con VMFS richiedeva tradizionalmente l&#8217;accesso diretto tramite vCenter o l&#8217;host ESXi.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scalabilit\u00e0:<\/strong> La scalabilit\u00e0 pu\u00f2 essere interpretata in modi diversi, ma \u00e8 importante considerare sia i limiti rigidi storici che i vincoli pratici. Ad esempio, durante l&#8217;era VMFS3, la dimensione massima di LUN implementabile era di 2TB, mentre NFSv3 aveva un massimo teorico di 18 exabyte. Anche quando VMFS4 ha aumentato significativamente il massimo a 64TB, gli utenti potevano comunque incontrare problemi di performance a causa di conflitti I\/O e blocco LUN, specialmente nell&#8217;era pre-VAAI con limitazioni del disco a rotazione. Le performance erano un argomento molto interessante, spesso frainteso. Sebbene NFS disponga di ulteriori costi generali di gestione e di host necessari per bloccare i propri file, NFS potrebbe tenere il passo con i workload intensivi. Tuttavia, il blocco \u00e8 stato generalmente considerato l&#8217;opzione &#8220;performante&#8221;. Anche i colli di bottiglia correlati alla rete e altre limitazioni dell&#8217;infrastruttura hanno posto delle sfide per le performance NFS. Inoltre, le soluzioni di clustering delle applicazioni, come <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.everpuredata.com\/products\/windows-file-services-flasharray-adding-full-smb-nfs-flasharray\/\">Windows File Services<\/a> in cluster, le istanze cluster di failover (FCI) di SQL Server e Oracle RAC, richiedevano tradizionalmente dispositivi a blocchi condivisi per il provisioning. Quindi, osservando il panorama attuale, cosa si \u00e8 evoluto per sfocare le linee di confine tra queste due opzioni fino al punto in cui un dibattito su quale scegliere \u00e8 in gran parte inutile?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. <strong>Le moderne piattaforme dati come Pure Storage supportano entrambi i protocolli.<\/strong> Storicamente, esistevano &#8220;aziende NAS&#8221; e &#8220;aziende SAN&#8221; distinte. Poich\u00e9 ogni tipo di vendor specializzato principalmente in block o file, la concorrenza sul mercato e gli obiettivi di fatturato hanno spesso alimentato un forte dibattito &#8220;block vs file&#8221;. Sebbene esistano differenze reali, le dinamiche di mercato hanno probabilmente amplificato queste distinzioni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. <strong>Sono stati compiuti progressi significativi in VAAI sia per NFS che per il block.<\/strong> Qui puoi vedere un <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmware.com\/docs\/vmw-vmware-vsphere-apis-array-integration-vaai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">elenco completo delle funzionalit\u00e0 VAAI<\/a>. Tuttavia, funzionalit\u00e0 chiave come il blocco hardware ATS, l&#8217;eliminazione di UNMAP\/blocchi e XCOPY per il block storage, insieme a funzionalit\u00e0 NFS simili come il clone di file completo, lo spazio di riserva e NFS v4.1 con pNFS, hanno essenzialmente incorporato funzionalit\u00e0 che in precedenza mancavano in un protocollo rispetto all&#8217;altro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. <strong>Il panorama del clustering delle applicazioni \u00e8 cambiato in gran parte.<\/strong> Mentre le soluzioni di clustering a dischi condivisi come le FCI di SQL Server non sono scomparse del tutto, molte moderne applicazioni in cluster ora utilizzano un&#8217;architettura &#8220;multi-nodo&#8221;, &#8220;shared-nothing&#8221; che elimina la necessit\u00e0 di dischi in cluster condivisi.
