Summary
In a candid fireside chat, Ricardo Moreno and David Stamen from Everpure broke down the four paths to modern virtualization and why stabilizing the data foundation—not just picking a destination—is what sets winning customers apart. The conversation offers partners a practical playbook for leading virtualization conversations before someone else does.
As a trusted partner, your customers look to you for help navigating the unknown. Many thought virtualization was settled, but that’s not the case anymore. Between shifting licensing costs and AI workloads rewriting the rules, they’re re-evaluating decisions they made a decade ago, and they’re looking to you for answers.
That was the premise behind our most recent fireside chat with two Everpure leaders. Ricardo Moreno, VP of Global Partner Organization, sat down with David Stamen, Technical Strategy Director, for a candid conversation on where virtualization actually stands today and the massive opportunity partners have to lead it.
The four paths haven’t changed. The messaging has.
Everpure has talked about four paths to modern virtualization for a while now, and the paths themselves are still the same. What’s changed, Stamen explained, is how each one gets positioned to customers:
- Driving VMware efficiency—for customers who need to stay put. This option offers low risk and high familiarity and is often home to the tier-zero applications they’ve historically relied on.
- Cloud bursting—no longer framed as “move to the cloud” wholesale, but as location flexibility for DR or test/dev environments. It’s especially useful when hardware supply chains or data center costs are the real pressure point.
- Hypervisor diversification—the fastest-growing path, driven by partnerships like Nutanix, Microsoft, and OpenShift. This isn’t full migration—it’s about reducing risk, creating strategic leverage, and in some cases, simply ensuring there’s another credible option in the market.
- Gradual modernization—the right fit for customers already running (or interested in) containerized workloads. This path is less about swapping a hypervisor and more about an entirely new operating model.
The bigger shift: Customers are no longer picking one path. Increasingly, it’s path one and three and four, depending on the workload. That’s where partners come in. No one understands a customer’s risk tolerance and workload mix better than the partner already in the room.
Start with the data foundation, not the destination
One theme kept surfacing throughout the conversation: The customers who come out ahead are the ones who stabilize their data foundation before deciding where they’re headed.
Stamen broke this down into four criteria that define a stable foundation:
- Protection: Resilience through replication, snapshots, immutability, and encryption
- Performance: Predictable throughput, efficiency, and low latency at scale
- Mobility: True cross-platform movement, like Everpure zero-copy move with Nutanix, which lets customers shift hypervisors without physically moving data
- Operations: Consistent tooling, monitoring, and non-disruptive upgrades across the entire environment, regardless of hypervisor
This is also, as Stamen put it, why Everpure exists in the first place—not as a storage company, but as the foundation underneath the platform decision.
Two customers, two very different paths
Stamen shared two real examples from the field:
The first was a customer facing a fast-approaching data center decommission—60 to 90 days to evacuate. Rather than renew a lease or rebuild on-prem, they moved to Everpure Cloud, preserving their existing investments and the same resilience they’d already built in. Since then, they’ve continued migrating more workloads to the cloud, with Everpure remaining their trusted data platform throughout.
The second customer was facing a renewal decision with a 90-day runway. Working with their partner, they identified an opportunity hiding in plain sight: By shifting their VDI environment to Azure Virtual Desktop (or an alternate hypervisor), they could free up 40% of their existing licenses. They moved that portion off VMware, renewed the remaining mission-critical workloads for three more years, and ended up with the best of both: reduced cost and reduced risk.
Neither customer took the same path—which is exactly the point.
Why timing makes all the difference
Asked what one piece of advice he’d give a partner who hasn’t yet had the virtualization conversation with a customer, Stamen didn’t hesitate: start today, not tomorrow.
If a customer isn’t having this conversation with you, they’re likely already having it with someone else. And once a customer commits to a direction, that decision tends to stick, which makes now, before a renewal deadline forces the issue, the best time to understand where each customer actually stands.
From the partner Q&A
A few highlights from the live questions:
- Can Everpure be used with customers staying on VMware/Broadcom? Yes, the partnership between Everpure and VMware/Broadcom continues to deepen, including ongoing work around VCF 9.1.
- How does Everpure compare to native HCI storage (e.g., Nutanix native vs. external Everpure)? The core distinction is disaggregated vs. hyper-converged architecture. By separating storage from compute, customers can scale each independently—and Everpure can offload data services (resilience, snapshots, automation) so the hypervisor itself runs more efficiently. For a third-party view, check out the Omdia technical validation of Nutanix Cloud Platform with Everpure.
- How do I reframe a “data layer first” conversation when my customer is already fixated on a destination? Stamen’s advice: This isn’t about slowing the customer down or upselling—it’s about making sure they understand what they actually need before locking in a decision they can’t easily unwind.
This is your moment
As Moreno closed the session, this is a pivotal moment for your customers, and Everpure wants to be there with you as your shared foundation. The opportunity in front of partners right now isn’t just technical—it’s the chance to lead the conversation before someone else does.
