Summary
Everpure FlashArray integration with Nutanix Cloud Platform delivers simple setup, NVMe-oF/TCP performance, and production-ready snapshots.
At Everpure, I’ve been fortunate to explore a wide range of solutions over my 11-year tenure. My latest deep dive has been into our integration between Nutanix Cloud Platform and Everpure™ FlashArray™.
With the recent shifts in the virtualization market, many IT professionals are finding themselves exploring platforms that feel entirely new. If you’re in that boat, you aren’t alone. I thought it was the perfect time to share some of the most interesting and surprising things I’ve learned while getting under the hood of Nutanix.
This isn’t meant to be an exhaustive technical manual; instead, it’s a high-level look at the features that make this integration a natural fit for modern infrastructure.
1. Setup is dead simple
Once your FlashArray and Nutanix cluster are online, the connection process is remarkably streamlined. This integration represents significant engineering effort, and it shows in the “it just works” experience.
The workflow generally looks like this:
- On the FlashArray: Create a realm and a pod. Optionally create a pod storage quota and/or a user and a policy specific to the Nutanix integration.
- On the Nutanix side: Create a vSwitch and add your NVMe-of/TCP interfaces in Prism Element.
- External storage connection: Establish the link between the two in Prism Element by providing the FlashArray management VIP, user credentials, and realm/pod.
The Quick Start Guide on our support site provides the specific primitives needed to get you from zero to production ready.
2. Realms introduce intuitive storage isolation
A realm on the FlashArray is a relatively new management construct. Realms allow you to create a separate, dedicated storage management space for your Nutanix workloads. This allows you to isolate Nutanix data traffic and management by policies, users, or roles, providing granular control and ensuring that your Nutanix operations remain logically separated from other workloads on the array.
3. Snapshots just work—and they work well
There is tight Nutanix snapshot integration with FlashArray. When you trigger an on-demand recovery point or build a protection policy in Prism Element or Prism Central, the heavy lifting is offloaded to the array.
Prism handles the orchestration and tracking of the vDisks or volume groups, but the actual data execution happens via REST API on the FlashArray system. This means you get the benefit of Everpure space-efficient, instantaneous, and immutable snapshots without adding overhead to your Nutanix nodes. Learn more about snapshot behavior with Nutanix.
4. NVMe-of/TCP, fast out of the box
A conscious decision was made by our engineering teams to initially limit this offering to NVMe-of/TCP. While iSCSI is a reliable workhorse, it’s a decades-old protocol that often requires manual tuning to handle modern, high-performance workloads.
NVMe-of/TCP avoids many of those pain points. In our testing, it has delivered strong performance right out of the gate with everything set up automatically in the backend when the connection is established between the two solutions. It also helps future-proof the stack, aligning with where the industry is headed.
5. High-performance datapath with Nutanix CVMs
In the Nutanix ecosystem, the Controller VM (CVM) is the engine of the external storage integration. When FlashArray is added as external storage, a set of three CVMs is utilized to manage the data path, ensuring high availability and performance scaling.
While this path through the CVMs is different from the physical host-interface connections we use with other hypervisors, it is the native way Nutanix handles data I/O. Our testing shows this architecture provides a highly performant, resilient datapath that meets the demands of enterprise production workloads.
6. Nutanix CSI Driver, validated and supported for FlashArray
Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) leverages the Nutanix CSI driver for persistent volume claims and related Kubernetes functions. We have already validated that FlashArray provides a complementary storage backend for this solution, giving the scale and performance customers desire in order to run their NKP clusters without issue. Get end-to-end guidance on using the platform here: Everpure FlashArray Integration with Nutanix CSI for Nutanix Kubernetes Platform.
7. This is just the beginning, but it’s ready for production
Although this is the first release of our Nutanix integration, it’s robust, fully supported by both Everpure and Nutanix, and ready for production environments. We already have early customers using it successfully in their data centers. And this is just the beginning. There is a strong roadmap of features and enhancements coming. If you’re testing the waters with Nutanix, now is a great time to try this out.
