Summary

Amazon Elastic VMware Service (Amazon EVS) is now generally available. Pure Storage Cloud supports Amazon EVS and serves as the ideal storage foundation for modernizing applications or shifting VMware-based workloads to run natively in AWS.

Today, AWS announced the GA of Amazon Elastic VMware Service (Amazon EVS). Last month, we announced that Pure Storage Cloud will support Amazon EVS—bringing the power of our Purity-based block storage to VMware environments running on AWS. Cloud Block Store on AWS is certified with VMware, ensuring seamless compatibility and enterprise-grade reliability for virtualized workloads

Pure Storage Cloud delivers a seamless, storage-optimized path forward for Amazon EVS customers—whether you’re migrating from on-prem, extending hybrid operations, or evolving from another cloud deployment. It gives VMware environments the runway needed to take off into AWS—with the same tools, the same control, and the same enterprise-grade features, integration, and performance you rely on in the data center.

Over the past month, we’ve been working closely with customers and partners as part of the public preview of Amazon EVS. Through our testing, we learned five important things.

1. Familiar Experience with Seamless Integration

Amazon EVS combined with Pure Storage provides the same enterprise-class experience as your on-premises environment. You can continue using the same VMware tools and Pure Storage integrations, such as the vSphere Plugin, within Amazon Elastic VMware Service. This consistency allows your teams to operate with familiar tooling, enabling smooth adoption of hybrid cloud and reducing complexity when extending or migrating to AWS.

2. NVMe-TCP Is Here—and It’s Fast

Both Amazon EVS and Pure Storage Cloud support NVMe-oF/TCP, a modern storage protocol that significantly outperforms traditional iSCSI. In our testing, we observed up to a 2.5X performance boost. Beyond raw speed, NVMe-TCP offers additional advantages:

  • Lower and more consistent latency and higher throughput for I/O-intensive applications
  • Easier network configuration and scalability over standard Ethernet
  • Less CPU overhead on your Amazon EVS ESXi hosts relative to iSCSI

3. Simple Workload Mobility Using Purity Replication and VMware HCX

Workload mobility between on-premises environments and AWS is streamlined using Pure Storage Purity replication and/or VMware HCX. These technologies can be used independently or in tandem, depending on your specific migration or disaster recovery needs. Whether you’re relocating entire applications, implementing a robust DR strategy, or enabling cross-region workload mobility, both tools offer flexible and efficient options to help ensure business continuity.

4. Confidently Refactor for Native AWS while Using Amazon EVS

For organizations modernizing their applications or shifting VMware-based workloads to run natively in AWS, Pure Storage Cloud serves as the ideal storage foundation. You can connect both Amazon Elastic VMware Service and native AWS compute services such as EC2 or Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service to the same Pure Storage Cloud instance. This enables parallel access to data, simplifies dev and test workflows, and allows the use of snapshots to copy and move data to wherever it’s needed. Refactoring becomes an incremental and manageable process rather than a large-scale overhaul.

5. Consistent Data Services and Centralized Management across Environments

Pure Storage Cloud ensures your storage services function consistently across both on-premises and cloud platforms. Features such as snapshots, replication, data reduction, and encryption are all available no matter where your data resides. This consistency supports a unified data management strategy, streamlines operations, and helps maintain compliance across your entire infrastructure.

Who Should Consider Amazon EVS + Pure Storage?

As you rethink infrastructure and application strategies, one goal remains consistent: moving to the cloud without sacrificing performance, visibility, or control.

Pure Storage Cloud is ideal for:

  • Enterprises migrating VMware workloads to AWS
  • Current VMC users seeking a more flexible path
  • Hybrid IT teams standardizing on Pure Storage across cloud and on-prem
  • Cloud architects looking to modernize infrastructure without sacrificing VMware integrations
